Ethiopia Organic Guji Shakiso
Ethiopia Organic Guji Shakiso
Farm Description
In 2010 I visited this group, a producer in the southern Guji zone of Shakiso. The people are known as Gujii Oromo, and coffee farming has been a core part of the culture in the highland areas. It's a distinct coffee from Yirga Cheffe, and Sidamo. Geographically, culturally, and in terms of cup flavors, these southern coffees have a different flavor profile while maintaining the same general characteristics; citrus and floral accents, a lively cup character. While dry-process Guji lots, which are more widely available, tend to have a generic fruity flavor found also in dry-process Sidamos (or dry-process coffees from nearly anywhere in Ethiopia), it is the transparency of the wet-process that reveals the distinctiveness of these regional lots. Add to this the fact that cultivars used in Ethiopia are largely regional, distinct local strains of coffees that have spread from the wild forest plants of western Ethiopia, to Harar in the East and to the southern districts like Guji. Because they own farm land and process their own coffee, they have license to export, and we could form this direct trade link with them.

Guji Shakiso is a bright coffee with excellent sweetness and mouthfeel. This is truly a balanced gem. The dry fragrance is perfumed with candied ginger, sweet spices, and raw honey along with a dense, cake-like sweetness. Orange peel, more honey, and sweet baking spices revealed themselves in the break. Jasmine tea is the fist flavor to hit us in the flavor profile, and is back ended by ripe peach. Guji Shakiso is a juicy coffee with a beautifully sweet watermelon flavor appearing as it cools. The bracing acidity is virtually equal in the both City and City+ roasts. Raw sugar sweetness runs the spectrum between roasts, but is slightly muted in darker roasts where almond/marzapan comes through in the finish. The mouthfeel is viscous and reminded me a bit of apple juice in its texture. Although this coffee may not have as much top end complexity as some Yirgacheffe or even Agaro region coffees, its combination of juicy fruit, weighted mouth feel, and excellent sweetness make it a unique and complete coffee. Excellent as a single origin (SO) espresso or as a component to your next espresso blend.
