I like to take pictures, I like to travel, and I sell coffee. On its face, myself and many others do the same in a straightforward way, especially when we go to a specific farm or mill where we are buying. We point our cameras at the farmer, at their trees, and their dog, at their wet-pulper machine, at their family members, and we take a picture.

Taking a look at our offer lists the last few days, I realize that a huge part of our job is keeping coffees separate. Sure, we excel in many other areas too (we are coffee "sourcerers" afterall!), but after taking into account that we currently have over 80 different lots of coffee for sale between Coffee Shrub and Sweet Maria's, I find myself greatly appreciating our warehouse crew's attention to detail, keeping each lot separate from the filling stage all the way to the picked and packaged orders.

We made a video of our Cuptoberfest cupping and conversation around the effects of different roast styles

This past October we hosted a cupping at the Sweet Maria's compound in West Oakland that was attended by roasters from all over the Bay area. Participants brought some of their own coffees to cup and discuss, but we started the festivities with a cupping and discussion of some roasts that we had produced for the event demonstrating stretching out the roast and some different examples of roast development.

Heading Toward Early Harvest in Central America

While our selection of late-harvest Centrals narrows on the Shrub offering list, the crop is in full swing in the lower and middle altitude farms. I traveled to Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua in the past couple weeks. It's too early to cup and select lots really, but more as a planning trip, to see how the harvest is going, and find out how Roya and other problems are affecting the crop.

That's not very exciting by any measure, but it refers to a part of the coffee process that is specific to Indonesia and creates a signature flavor. Wet-hulled coffees can have more body and lower acidity, but they also fall short of the sweetness and aroma uncovered by other methods.

For years we have thought about working in a more direct way with small-scale farmers in Guatemala, and in the 2013 harvest year this effort came to fruition.

We're calling this "Proyecto Xinabajul" (pronounced She-nah-bah-hool), named for the ancient Mayan name for the Huehuetenango region. In this project, we have cupped many hundreds of samples to identify small producers who are producing quality coffee in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes mountains.
